Photoshop Adjustments - Basic Editing Tools Part-1

Brightness/Contrast

Choose "Image" then "Adjustments" and lastly "Brightness and Contrast." Click on this option. A dialogue box will open.
Moving it to the left makes the picture darker, while sliding it to the right makes the picture brighter. Choose the desired brightness and then proceed to contrast.


Levels

The levels tool can move and stretch brightness levels of an image histogram.The Levels command can give you better contrast and is the tool for you.Open the Levels dialog box by pressing Ctrl+L (Command+L on the Mac) or choosing Image→Adjustments→Levels. The graph shown in the center of the dialog box is a histogram. You can use this dialog box, histogram and all, for evaluating and adjusting levels in the following ways:
  1. View separate histograms for each channel.  
  2. Adjust the black and white points based on the histogram.
  3. See exactly what happens when you u
  4. Visually check the distribution of dark, midtone, and light values.
  5. se the Auto Tone command.   

Hue/Saturation

  • Hue: Shifts all the colors clockwise or counterclockwise around the color wheel, depending on the direction you move the slider.
  • Saturation: Increases or decreases the richness of the colors in an image.
  • Lightness: Modifies the brightness values.

    HUE_SATURATION

You can adjust any of these values by moving the sliders and watching the results in the image window. The top color bar at the bottom of the dialog box represents the colors in their order on the color wheel before you made any adjustment. The lower color bar shows how the modifications you make affect the colors.

HDR Toning

The HDR Toning command in Photoshop CS6 can be used to give an image a stylised HDR effect.The HDR Toning command will only work on a flattened document
 Go to Image>Adjustments>HDR Toning. In the HDR Toning box we can adjust the Radius,Strength,Highlight,Saturation etc . . . You can adjust any of these values by moving the sliders and watching the results in the image window.The effect will tease out detail in the shadow areas, so once it’s applied, you may find that you need to use other retouching techniques such as spot removal and skin smoothing to perfect the look
